The European market is flourishing with a 2% increase in tourists between 2001 and 2006. The average length of stay has also increased by 3.2%, though the number of arrivals remains stable. According to the latest UIA (Union of International Associations) report, Lyon now holds the no. 2 position in the country, beating Strasbourg, its historic rival in business tourism. The Lyon metropolitan area is no. 19 on the list of top 20 European cities, and ranks ahead of Edinburgh, Oslo and Turin.
At the world level, Lyon has jumped up the list by 47 places in 2 years, from no. 77 in 2004 to no. 30 in 2006, moving ahead of Hong Kong, Sydney, Chicago and Shanghai, with 42 major international events organized per year.
